Santa Clara, California has raised the sales tax rate to an eye-watering 9.75%, prompting jubilation and glee from officials and activists.
How are local politicians and the people they represent different? Politicians literally leap into the air and cheer and high-five when they pass a tax increase; voters cry when they see a new tax increase.
We supposed we’d cheer to if a tax increase would help us win our next election. There’s one natural resource that politicians will never stop loving: other people’s money.
Congratulations, liberal voters of Silicon Valley—you’re getting what you voted for good and hard. And what you voted for is to pay higher local taxes than almost anywhere else in the state. County officials are saying they need the money to solve a billion-dollar (!) shortfall, but this county already spends over five thousand dollars per resident—that’s 19% more than other counties its size. These kleptocrats celebrated their victory at a swanky tequila bar—on your dime. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a thank you card.
But don’t worry: this new onerous tax will expire in 2031. they could have tried, you know, cutting the waste and fraud rampant in local government, but that’s hard. They wanted to do it the easy way by putting out the fire with more of your cash.
Now just relax, pour yourself another shot of tequila, and bend over: the Santa Clara tax collector is on his way over.
